Australian Federal Police are investigating alleged rorting in the parliamentary office of Sunshine Coast MP and new Speaker Peter Slipper, as scrutiny of his taxpayer-funded entitlements shows he claimed nearly $1100 a day from Australian tax-payers, on travel and other expenses during the first half of the year. Slipper's expense claims have been scrutinised previously. Among other things, it was reported that he clocked up almost $30,000 in taxi fares over a period of 14 months. This made him Quensland's most expensive politician after former prime minister Kevin Rudd. Mr Slipper's expenses bill for the six months to the end of 2009 was $640,562 – above Treasurer Wayne Swan's $491,236 and second only to Mr Rudd's $1.18 million. When you willingly send your money to Canberra in the hope that something good will come of it, this is the inevitable result. |
