High Court says green charities legit

The highest court in Australia has ruled that "charities" pushing political messages under a cloak of environmental fanaticism, can keep their unfair 'deductible gift recipient' status, which allows donors to write down their donations as tax deductions.

Contrast this with our group, Liberty Australia, which promotes the founding principles of Western Civilisation, a market economy, peaceful international relations and sound money. We were rejected by the government, when trying to attain deductible gift recipient status.

This High Court overuled an earlier Federal Court ruling that upheld the Australian Taxation Office's decision to remove this status from certain organisations that are clearly pushing political material. The High Court is therefore completely out of step, and law-makers in Canberra need to take action to alleviate the situation.

Such action is unlikely considering the Labor-Green alliance and the pro-Green independents, like Mr Oakeshott, who misnomerically call themselves "rural".

Of course, it would be better if there were no income tax at all, but even worse than having an income tax, is having one from which groups pushing increased government intervention, are exempt.
