• A claim for equality of material position can be met only by a government with totalitarian powers. - Friedrich A. Hayek

Waste management better in private hands

Denmark has cancelled planned shipments of HCB waste currently residing in Australia.

This example reminds us that governmental control of waste management has lead to lack of price signalling, which in turn has resulted in a very economically inefficient situation in which fanatical environmentalists, opposed to industry and production, can wield influence in government and reduce economic activity.

With the government in control, under the influence of anti-industrial greens, we have forced recycling, smaller and smaller bins, and expensive and increasing council rate payments. With a private market in waste disposal we could have an efficient system where the hazardous nature of a certain material would be reflected in the cost of disposal. It would be a system based on private property rights, where you could choose between waste disposal operators, and you could choose if you could be bothered recycling and save some money on the cost of disposal.
