Reducing welfare is, of course, a good thing. Don't, however, be fooled by the federal Labor government's reductions in middle-class welfare. These cuts have nothing to do with ideology and everything to do with opportunism and wedge politics. Labor IS the party of huge government. It IS their ideology. (as opposed to the Lib-Nat coalition, who are merely the party of big government) Yes we should reduce middle class welfare, but we should also be reducing government spending in other areas. We should not be re-nationalising the telecommunications industry with the over-priced white elephant known as the National Broadband Network. We should not be putting in a carbon tax that will result in massive increases in the cost-of-living. We should not be setting mandatory "renewable" energy targets that will do the same. We should not have wasted billions on the BER and pink batts. We should not have instituted schemes to subsidise solar planels and green loans. And we sure as hell shouldn't have spent 8 million dollars on a Grocery Choice website that was eventually shut down. |
