Earthquakes are not economic boons

When you break a bunch of windows playing backyard cricket, there might be a boost for the glass business, but that does not mean you have "stimulated" the economy.

The same principle applies to earthquakes. There are some who are claiming that earthquakes in New Zealand and Japan are good for the economy.

When you break something, the resources you put into building it back up again are diverted from other things. This is the point Bastiat was trying to make 150 years ago.
